Wrath of the Righteous power builds: Mystic Theurge

Okay, after a break I am back with a new build! The enhanced edition of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is out now, so I thought it’d be a good idea to post some interesting builds with a twist. This time it’s the Mystic Theurge prestige class, a blending of an arcane and divine caster. If you are interested in other builds, check out my main builds page.

Are you interested in having unparalleled versatility, accessing practically every spell in the game? The MT is for you. With the Abundant Casting line of mythic feats you will have a preposterous amount of spell slots available to cast them all with as well! Would you like some very impressive martial melee capabilities, as well as a special weapon just for you? Got you covered.

The first thing to do is decide if you will be pursuing the Angel or Lich mythic path, as it will help decide many things along the way. I’ll be pointing out what to select when.

Build Progression

1.  Exploiter Wizard, background Pickpocket for the +2 to initiative. This build will assume human but the race is up to you, this build is not feat starved! We will be going the prepared caster route, though it’s very possible to go the spontaneous caster route too. You have an option as you can choose a cleric first, but having access to Potent Magic, Grease and Glitterdust alone is a significant advantage for a low-leveled character. Glaives are great initial weapon for your Wizard

  • Str 12 Dex 12 Con 12 Int 17 (16 if Angel) Wis 16 (17 if Angel) Cha 12 (if Lich)
    • Having a 12 Str is useful as we will be giving the PC an awesome martial weapon. Your Int, Wis and Cha will change depending on which mythic path you aim for. Int gets the edge for Lich, Wis for Angel. Charisma can be dumped if you are going Angel, whereas if you go Lich you will eventually get to add charisma to HP’s
  • Skills:  All the Knowledge and Lore skills. I think Persuasion is worth it if you want it, as it becomes a class skill with MT and there are lots of gear boosts to it
  • Feats:  Spell Focus Conjuration, Martial Weapons Proficiency, Greater Spell Focus Conjuration
  • Exploit:  Potent Magic
  • Spells:  Grease, and whatever buff spells you want
  • Deity:  Any good-aligned deity if you are going Angel. The domains won’t matter much as you won’t get high levels in cleric, they’re mostly for spell slots. If going Lich, Urgathoa is best for some nice dialogue options in game

2.  Wizard

  • Spells:  Up to you, I recommend Protection from Alignment, Magic Weapon

3. One more level of wizard. Feat: Improved Initiative–all spell casters want to go first

  • Spells:  I recommend Glitterdust, Mirror Image

4. Cleric, Ecclesitheurge. We don’t lose anything and we gain quite a bit

  • +Int for Lich, +Wis for Angel from now on
  • Domains:  If you want suggestions, Glory+War or War+Law are great for Angel, Strength+War for Lich

5. Feat:  Combat Reflexes, which will help with melee power with your reach weapon, used in combination with Grease this gets awesome

6. This is the last cleric level for a while

7. Mystic Theurge!

  • Feat:  MM Heighten Spell–key feat for spells like Grease, Glitterdust, etc
  • Spells:  False Life, Blur

8. Spells:  Haste, Heroism

9. Feat:  Outflank, to go along with everyone else in your party that has this feat. If you’re not interested in melee at all then grab MM Bolster Spell

  • Spells:  Stinking Cloud, Displacement

10. Spells:  Greater False Life, Greater Invisibility

11. Feat:  Weapon Focus: Greataxe (if Angel) or Bardiche (if Lich) for your special weapon. If you’re opposed to this, consider another MM feat such as Extend Spell, or whatever you like. There are two options for great weapons:

  • The Grave Singer greataxe is obtained through the Unholy Symbol of Rovagug decree chain. It has the largest crit range and greatest crit multiplier together in one weapon
  • The Death’s Consonant bardiche is obtained through the Branch of the Last Ash decree chain, and is my preferred pick, especially if going Lich: it lets you use Intelligence for attack and damage!
  • Spells:  Dimension Door, Mass Enlarge Person

12. Spells:  Echolocation, Communal Stoneskin or Geniekind

13. Feat:  Dazzling Display, unless you aren’t interested in Shatter Defenses, in which case take whatever you want

14. Spells:  Greater Heroism, Greater Transformation

15. Feat:  Shatter Defenses. You are either taking this or not, depending on your choice at level 13

  • Spells:  Mass Cat’s Grace, Greater Dispel Magic

16. Spells:  Legendary Proportions. Angel: get Ice Body. Lich: you’ve already got a spell that does the same thing as Ice Body, so get whatever you like

17. If you chose Angel pick the Wizard class now. If you chose Lich, pick Cleric. This is because with your combined spellbooks you have already maxed out the highest level spells related to your mythic path, so getting the opposite lets you max out spells you don’t yet have.

    • Feat:  Improved Critical: Bardiche or Greataxe– unless you didn’t choose any martial feats earlier

18. Not much to say here

19. Take whatever feat you want, maybe another metamagic if you like?

20. Boom, you’re done, level 9 arcane and divine magic!

Mythic Progression — Angel

1. Abilities: Close to the Abyss if you want the extra gore attack, or Instrument of Freedom. Also Abundant Casting, it increases slots for both arcane and divine spells

2. Extra ability: Enduring Spells. MT’s might be the ultimate buffer in the whole game, and between this feat chain and Extend Spell you can make very short spells last 24 hours

3. Improved Abundant Casting–it’s appropriate here because this where we are merging spellbooks, (cleric for Angel, wizard for Lich) and your spellcasting progression takes off

4. Greater Abundant Casting. Now you have more spell slots than Trump has mistresses

  • Everlasting Flame is my pick

5. Greater Enduring Spells, which is awesome.

  • Piercing Rays

6. From here on the progression is more up to you. Some good options include expanded arsenal necromancy, mythic improved initiative, elemental barrage, or ever ready if you are more martial

  • Abolish Guile is my recommendation here

7. Ever Ready is pretty great, but of course elemental barrage is also great

  • Solar Winds

8. Either Mythic Imp Init or Mythic Imp Critical

  • Speed of Light is cool

9. Pick any metamagic you like that you might have picked before, or Archmage Armor if you want that more

  • Whatever you like, Flame of Life is cool

10. Mythic Imp Init or Mythic Spell Focus if you want

  • Overwhelming Flames

Mythic Progression Lich

1. Same as Angel

2. Same as Angel

3. Improved Abundant Casting. I recommend Skeletal Marksman, cuz ranged characters are great.

  • If you like the martial focus, get Fear Control
  • If you like pure spellcasting, Withering Life, which is a lot of fun to combine with Magic Missile. Ideally drain Str/Dex/Con

4. Same as Angel. I’d recommend Skeletal Fighter here.

  • Shatter Defenses
  • Weapon Training Bows

5. Same as Angel.

6. Lots of options as above. I like Expanded Arsenal: Necromancy. Why be a Lich and not use necromancy? You can also re-spec your character with a Necromantic focus if you like, in which case you might pick mythic spell focus necromancy.

  • Weapon of Death, or Withering Life here. If you’ve already WL, then consider Deadly Magic or Eclipse Chill, which combines nicely with Negative Eruption

7. Same as Angel really

8. Same as Angel

  • I like Skeletal Cleric, but it can really be anything

9. Same as Angel

  • Indestructible Bones can work

10. Same as Angel. I prefer Mythic Spell Focus Necromancy because you’re practically the god of necromancy at this point, but it’s really your preference

Equipment/Gear

Weapon:  Death’s Consonant or Grave Singer, obviously. Quarterstaff of the War Mage is very good as is the Plague of Madness quarterstaff

Head:  Whatever increases Int, and later Int+Wis. Darkness Caress is pretty incredible for increasing everything if you are ok with the price

Neck:  Vellexia’s Magnifying Amulet for both builds

Goggles:  Goggles of Piercing Gaze. You could also get Goggles of Undeniable Truth which goes with Robe of Unspeakable Truth for a combined effect

Armor:  We can’t wear armor

Chest:  Robe of the Seven Sins is what you want to end up with (if you have the Midnight Isles DLC). When you run into Robe of Unspeakable Truth hang on to it!

Belt:  Belts that increase Str and Con, after Lich transformation Str and Dex

Gloves:  Embroidered Gloves are great, but Fencer’s Gift or Gloves of Enduring Wizard are great choices

Boots:  Ronneck’s Sacrifice are best in the game, bar none

Bracers: If you’re a Lich this will be your phylactery. Bracers of armor are good,

Rings:  Ring of Evasion is good, and Bane of Spirit ring is a great thematic choice and can convert damage type to Force

Cloak:  Bound of Possibility is awesome for Liches, or the Cloak of Darkest Rites

Consumables:  Greater Quicken MM rod, Grandmaster’s Rod, Rod of Magical Affinity (if you have the Midnight Isles DLC), Extend MM rod allows you to turn even 1 round/level spells into 24 hour spells if you take Greater Enduring Spells, Skeletal Finger if Lich. Devouring Lust rod is great too

  1. An interesting idea but there are a few problems with it for anything close to core difficulty. First you are basically trying to run 3-4 stats as high tier or main stat. (int/wisdom depending on lich or angel for the focus, but both are going to be at least +4 by endgame if not +5 just to make sure you can take the high tier spells; then with a side of charisma for a worthwhile amount of channels, and a spare bit in str/dex for weapon damage.) In Wotr you are constantly fighting unbalanced foes a ton above your base level, which means to have even a snowball’s chance in hell of hitting things with your melee weapon you need either a high base attack bonus, or a high stat to compensate. Wizard and cleric don’t really get a ton of bab, and even with being buffed/enlarged/potioned to the limits you are still going to miss a ton. (also similar sort of issue with some of the feats for this build. No sense in going for critical stuff without fighter levels and/or the ability to actually hit foes.)

My recommendation if you want to run a mystic theurge is to grab empyreal sorc instead of exploit wizard. You lose potent magic, but with only 3 levels in exploiter you get like two uses a day tops outta it anyhow so not a huge loss. Instead you get to take all those points out of int and hyper focus them in wisdom as both casting classes use that as their main. This gets you more bang for your buck as well as higher hit chance for ray spells. The down side is it takes a level longer to get 2nd level spells, so you’ll get theuge started at 8 instead of 7. But that isn’t a huge loss as you weren’t planning to do any other dips besides more caster stuff at the tail end.

If instead you wanted a more melee focused full caster, I’d recommend the crazy dragon build. So you start off with a dragon bloodline sorc up till level 5, then take a 4 level dip into dragon disciple. This gives you a magical bite attack, extra ac, a breath weapon, +4 str, and 3 levels of spell progression plus decent bab. Then 3 levels into lore master to steal two feats that you normally can’t access without being a high level fighter, like exhausting critical or cleaving finish or if you just needed a spell from yet another spell book for some reason. Then you run the final gambit through ek for a bab bump every level and 7 levels of spell progression (since you can’t get above 20 without going legend). You won’t get to get the final level for any class line, but you also won’t need it with nearly full bab progression and max level spell book.

    • Thanks, I appreciate your thoughtful reply. Here are my thoughts:

Combining MT with Spontaneous casters sadly means you’ll only ever get 9 spells in 1 class because they have delayed spellcasting, especially when merging for normal spells.

I like the idea of a dragon build like yours. Let me see if I can come up something. As for the melee-focused full caster in general , I do have full caster builds with more of a melee focus, you may want to check those out as well!
